A Talk To Afrikan Men …… Combat Liberalism

As men who are a part of the oppressed, we really need to pay more attention to the conversations we are having with each other when we are spending time together. A great deal of our conversation is about sports. Sports are entertainment and for people who are oppressed entertainment being a big part of our discussion is not the most conscious thing to do, to put it lightly. Another big topic when just men are having a discussion is ego tripping off our so-called sexual conquests. We do believe that men talking about our relationship to women is very important, but for it to be about sexual conquests instead of the oppression of women that we are responsible for is very irresponsible on our part.

Everything being so individualized is part of our ego problem that is related to the oppression of women. An individual by themselves in reality cannot do hardly anything that would be a big contribution to our liberation. If we are oppressed, the most conscious thing for us to discuss would be how we can change our condition from being oppressed to being liberated. President Kwame Nkrumah say if we oppressed nothing else should matter but liberation.

We raise these questions because we think that one of the biggest problems that we have as men is that we are very liberal with each other. In a society of exploitation being liberal is not considered a bad thing. But for people who are struggling for their liberation liberalism is deadly. Ego and liberalism are related. Egoism is a doctrine that individual self-interest is the actual motive of all conscious action. It is excessive concern for oneself with exaggerated feelings of self-importance; conceit. Conceit is too high an opinion of one’s abilities, worth, or personality; vanity. If we pass these bad ideas to our boys, our nation would be devastated . These ideas are the biggest problem to us developing an “esprit de corps.” Esprit de corps is the common spirit existing in the members of a group an inspiring enthusiasm, devotion, and strong regard for the honor of the group. Not being a member of any kind of organization that is working for the interest of the people is another reason. We would never develop it unless we love, respect, honor, and protect our women and children.
