In Dominica, the leaves of P. carolinensis are boiled and taken as tea. Sugar or salt could be added to taste. The tea is taken as treatment for cough and cold. P. caronilensis leaves can also be boiled together with ginger and sage (Salvia officinalis) leaves to make tea to which sugar is added. The tea is taken to treat troublesome cough, bronchitis, tuberculosis, flu and fevers. In different parts of the world, the plant is used to treat stomach ailments, flatulence, headaches, sore throats, catarrh, high blood pressure, rash and toothaches . The plant is also believed to possess anti-inflammatory, anticoagulant and antiseptic property.
