Education Must Precede The Title.

Barbados to become a republic by 2021. While for many persons like myself who welcome all steps the country makes to distance itself from the legacy, and residue of its colonial past, sometimes one must not only look at what is being done, but also how it is being done.

Before we get to the how, let us for a moment take a look at the what in the context of what it means to be a Republic. Republic, a form of government in which a state is ruled by representatives of the people. Modern republics are founded on the idea that sovereignty rests with the people, though who is included and excluded from the category of the people has varied across history, and is one that may well be asked of Barbados presently. Because citizens do not govern the state themselves but through representatives, republics may be distinguished from direct democracy, though modern representative democracies are by and large republics. The term republic may also be applied to any form of government in which the head of state is not a hereditary monarch.

Locating Barbados as a Republic in my eyes is an attempt by the government to solidify the notion that sovereignty rest with the people, and as such this cannot be fully realized with the head of state being our former colonial master. I do not see it as the any process of democratic reform. Will Barbados’ change to a Republic  directly have impact on the everyday functioning of our politics (corruption inclusive)? I cannot say as I am not a political scientist and have never studied politics at any lengths. However based on the fact that varied forms of government are labeled with the title Republic, it is quite feasible to think that it will be business as usual under our new title. Despite its democratic implications, the term was claimed in the 20th century by states whose leadership enjoyed more power than most traditional monarchs, including military dictatorships such as the Republic of Chile under Augusto Pinochet and totalitarian regimes such as the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

It is the idea of the sovereignty of the people that I am focusing on in this article. The how! How do you create a sovereign people? Certainly not by just the changing of a title. Has Barbados (government) ever instructed its educational system to arm its students with the essential knowledge of themselves that would lay the foundation for their sovereignty? This type of education is not academic.  In the newest Tarzan movie, one of my favourite  scenes was when the chief being told by the white invader to kneel, said that the chief never kneels. He died, but he did not kneel, Are Barbadians educated not to kneel, not to bow? Are Barbadians educated in a pride of self that is not merely cosmetic and at best skin deep? If we listen to the Barbadian Prime Minister’s address to the nation through the Throne Speech, as it related to the issues of cannabis and same sex unions, she speaks about following international and even some regional presidencies in formulating her own plan of action. Little if anything is spoken of framing social policies in these areas based on facts and the will of the people (not a referendum). Sovereignty demands that I lessen my dependency on external entities for my acceptance and survival. Thus in my view, to be listed on the top 10 places in the world that are tourist dependent, is nothing to feel proud about. A sovereign people will never rest the fate of their existence on the charity of another, or their service/servitude/slaving  to them.

Barbados does not need to be a Republic to be sovereign, it needs to be educated. Can I be sovereign when my culture glorifies my colonial and enslaved past, while urging me to assimilate into the mannerism and religious beliefs of my oppressor. Barbados needs to glory in itself. I refer to Barbados in the context of this article I mean the masses of people who are of African descent. It means little to move the White Queen as head of state and retain the White King as our economic power with his family with their White Privilege.

I am for the change to being a Republic with the education that must proceed it.

I end this article, my two cents on the matter, with the words of Black Stalin who spoke about the power of unity which is needed if sovereignty is to be achieved, and a true republic of the people.

You try with a federation, the whole thing end in confusion
Caricom and then Carifta, but somehow I smelling disaster
Mister West Indian politician, I mean you went to big institution
And how come you can’t unite 7 million?
When a West Indian unity, I know is very easy
If you only rap to your people and tell them like me

Them is one race (The Caribbean man)
From the same place (The Caribbean man)
That make the same trip (The Caribbean man)
On the same ship (The Caribbean man)
So we must push one common intention
Is for a better life in the region
For we woman, and we children
That must be the ambition of the Caribbean man
The Caribbean man, the Caribbean man

You say that the federation was imported quite from England
And you going and form a Carifta with a true West Indian flavour
But since Carifta started running, morning, noon and night all I hearing
Is just money speech them prime minister giving
But I say, no set of money could form a unity
First of all your people need their identity

Like one race (The Caribbean man)
From the same place (The Caribbean man)
That make the same trip (The Caribbean man)
On the same ship (The Caribbean man)
So we must push one common intention
Is for a better life in the region
For we woman, and we children
That must be the ambition of the Caribbean man
The Caribbean man, the Caribbean man

Caricom is wasting time, the whole Caribbean gone blind
If we don’t know from where we coming, then we can’t plan where we going
That’s why some want to be communist, brother, some want to be socialist
And one set of religion to add to the foolishness
Look, a man who don’t know his history can’t form no unity
How could a man who don’t know his roots form his own ideology?

Like one race (The Caribbean man)
From the same place (The Caribbean man)
That make the same trip (The Caribbean man)
On the same ship (The Caribbean man)
So we must push one common intention
Is for a better life in the region
For we woman, and we children
That must be the ambition of the Caribbean man
The Caribbean man, the Caribbean man

The Federation done dead and Carifta going to bed
But the cult of the Rastafarian spreading through the Caribbean
It have Rastas now in Grenada, it have Rastas now in St. Lucia
But to run Carifta, yes, you getting pressure
If the Rastafari movement spreading and Carifta dying slow
Then is something them Rastas on, that them politicians don’t know

That there’s one race (The Caribbean man)
From the same place (The Caribbean man)
That make the same trip (The Caribbean man)
On the same ship (The Caribbean man)
So they pushing one common intention
Is for a better life in the region
For their woman, and their children
That must be the ambition of the Caribbean man
The Caribbean man, the Caribbean man
